In Kathmandu, right outside the boudha area, there’s a slum mainly inhabited by people coming from the state of Bihar in India. Families come for seasonal work in Nepal, earn a bit a of money then go back to their village in India.
Most of the time while parents are out in the city in search of work, children are left to themselves in the slum, pretty much doing nothing.
We decided to provide them scholarship in the Samata Shiksha Niketan School, which was within a walking distance from the slum.
The scholarship, on top of the school fees, included bags, school uniform, and all the necessary materials such as books, pencils and so on.
In addition to that, for we developed an small institute within the slum itself, providing support for homework and helping students catching up with the subjects they were thaught at school.
This project took place from 2011 to 2012.
